A little over a week ago was Ryan and Lucy’s wedding. It was a beautiful spring day, at The Ancaster Old Mill, and I was honored to be assisting Jenn with her photography. It was especially fun to be there, because Ryan and Lucy commissioned me for a wedding illustration. Seeing their reaction to the commission printed and framed is always a blast.
Many couples need some guidance when it comes to figuring out what they want visually, but that’s where my expertise comes in handy; helping you come up with a great looking compostion! I welcome ideas and inspiration and in this case Lucy and Ryan came with a great idea involving fun characters. It was to be the Joker and Batgirl on top of a Gotham skyscraper, evading the cops and Batman, their love for each other evident. Ryan totally embraced the idea of being the Joker, but as he is a good looking guy I purposely toned down some of the manic scariness and showed off the adoration he feels for Lucy. My only recommendation to them was that Lucy change from Batgirl to Harley Quinn, Joker’s true love. On top of that I thought Lucy and Harley Quinn had a striking resemblance. They loved the idea! In the initial consultation, I always like to get details of things important to each of them. They both talked about putting their cat Dexter somewhere in the illustration, as well as a reference to the Beatles. These little touches always enhance and make the commission more personalized for the couple and always give me a thrill to see if they can find them.
It was a truly fun collaboration. They were super excited every step of the way and this energy helped the creative juices flow. The final illustration was printed on a metallic print paper done by our amazing lab, and framed with a signing mat by our favorite framer Scott Framing. We’ve worked very hard at finding the highest quality vendors that make our products shine, and this time they truly out did themselves. Seeing everyone’s reaction to this collaboration was an honor and a privilege, but the true joy for me is collaborating with fun enthusiastic couples!
