Part of being a commercial artist is running a business. While there are aspects of this that I’m horrible at and procrastinate on (accounting, marketing) and parts that I very much enjoy (comic book conventions, book fairs, meeting fans and showcasing my latest books, and art), I still have to do all of them. This series of my process blog will talk about different aspects of the business.
As I’m knee deep in the third graphic novel for the Arcane Awakening series published by Mess Bucket Comics, I try to always remember that I’m very lucky to do what I’m doing. Everyday I get up and get to draw for a living. I’m working on a story that I like, with a writer that I like working with, and I’m getting paid pretty well to boot. There are always things that worry me. I’ve got to start getting taxes ready. I’ve got to finish a pitch for Emerald City Comiccon. Plus I have to get my website updated. Really they are not that bad, but I still stress a bit about them. That’s why I need to step aside from that stress, and just enjoy the moment. Weeks go by so quickly. We’re already almost done with the second month of the year. Spring is just around the corner. That’s why I try to take a deep breath and enjoy what’s in front of me. Because just like that, the moment’s gone.
