(I’m coming off of one of the biggest comic cons of the year and so I apologize for the lateness of this post)
Comic book conventions have been a great way for me to connect with fans looking for some personalized art. In fact it’s how I started doing personalized illustrations. Four years ago, I was at Fan Expo in the artist alley selling my wares, when I had this woman and her boyfriend asking about a con sketch. These sketches are usually done on the quick, and many artists are known for them; me not so much. At least not back then. So this cute couple, Jen and Carlos, asked me to draw her as Disney Princess. My immediate thought was a bit of fear and trepidation. At that time in my career, I wasn’t comfortable drawing that style per se, not as a con sketch at least, yet she was so endearing, that I really wanted to try. I talked them into letting me do the sketch at home, and instead of it being traditionally drawn, would it be okay if I attempted it digitally. We set a date when the drawing would be done and that was the birth of me doing personalized illustration.
Since that time, I’ve done a continuing series for that couple, and every year I see them at Fan Expo, we talk about finishing up the series as a trilogy. This past Fan Expo was no different. After that initial illustration of Jen as a Disney Princess, she commissioned me to draw her and Carlos as superheroes and together we invented a story of how they met and became a couple. The next year Carlos contacted me to continue the story, but this time he would propose in the final panel. I had every confidence that she would say yes. And in fact, she did over the weekend of that year’s Fan Expo. The following year they had their wedding a few weeks before the annual event and my wife and I were invited. It was such an honour to be part of their life in this way. I have a feeling I know what the next illustration in the trilogy will be. In any case, Fan Expo will forever be tied to this unique relationship that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
There have been other great fans that have met me at Fan Expo and have allowed me to draw personalized illustrations for important events in their lives. Amanda and Anthony are huge horror fans, and love my monster prints. Amanda commissioned me to draw them and their family in a horror themed illustration for Anthony as a surprise! Since then, they’ve become friends, and come visit me at every local show. It’s always something I look forward to during those long con days! I’ve also done an illustration for Johnny Deluca for his invitation to his Stag and Doe. He was Super Johnny, bringer of the awesome to all of his friends and family!
It’s been such a pleasure to be part of these peoples lives and to have my art adorn their walls or be part of a major event. Comic cons create that instant connection that make what I do worth doing. And this years Fan Expo was no different. So if you see me at a con, ask to see my portfolio, so I can share the latest illustrations and tell you the story about how the Disney princess found her superhero!
